Instructor

Dr. Mason M. Medizade – President and CEO, Petrolects, LLC

Dr. Mason Medizade has more than twenty five years of experience in the oil and gas industry, worldwide. His oilfield experience spans from reservoir engineering, drilling, and completion, to enhanced oil recovery and petroleum production. Specifically, he has done engineering work related to real time production monitoring, production enhancement, drilling fluids, reserve estimation, filtration, sand control, surface facility design, and EOR and reservoir management. He has been involved in consulting, research and teaching in renewable and non-renewable energy sources since 1984. Dr. Medizade’s recent oilfield work involves real time flow monitoring for which he has obtained a US patent. Dr. Medizade is president and CEO of Petrolects, LLC.

Dr. Medizade is also a faculty member in the mechanical engineering department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo,

where he focuses on petroleum engineering, wind energy, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. Professor Medizade has taught numerous short courses in petroleum engineering to clients such as Petroleum Development of Oman (PDO), California Division of Oil and Gas, Petroleum Technology Transfer Council (PTTC), Texaco, Pertamina, and others. Dr. Medizade is an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and many other professional societies. He has authored numerous technical papers. His recent SPE paper discusses cyclic steam injection monitoring in diatomite. He has won numerous awards and certificates for his teaching and research work, including professorship from UNOCAL. He holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in petroleum engineering from University of Southern California (USC), and a B.Sc. degree in chemical engineering from Abadan Institute of Technology (AIT) in Abadan, Iran.

Course Content

Day 1

Day 1 provides an introduction to the major components involved on a rotary drilling rig, including: rig power systems, power transmission, hoisting system operation and components, rotating system operation and components, downhole assembly basics, drill bits, circulating system operation and components, , blowout preventers and well control equipment, rig instrumentation, and spinning and torquing tools. Session includes example problems and solutions.

Day 2

Day 2 takes a close look at drilling mud. Topics covered include: functions of drilling mud, types of drilling mud, composition of drilling mud, properties of drilling mud and how each property affects the drilling operation, drilling mud testing, additives used to control drilling mud properties, hole problems related to drilling mud, and formulas used in drilling mud calculations. Session includes example problems and solutions.

Day 3

Day 3 provides discussions of well cementing, drilling hydraulics, and making hole. Topics covered in well cementing include: functions of cement, requirements for a good cementing job, cement mixing equipment, cement properties and testing, the cementing process, casing accessories used to aid cementing, types of cement, cement additives, and formulas used in cement calculations. Topics covered in drilling hydraulics and making hole on day 3 include: bit selection, factors affecting rate of penetration, bit hydraulic horsepower, and types of bit wear. Session includes example problems and solutions.

Day 4

Day 4 continues discussion on drilling hydraulics and making hole and then moves on to casing design. Topics covered in drilling hydraulics and making hole on day 4 include: average flow velocity in pipe and annulus, laminar versus turbulent flow criteria in pipe and annular flow, pressure drop in laminar and turbulent pipe and annular flow, pressure drop across the bit, fluid power requirements, and total pressure drop within the bottomhole assembly. Topics covered in casing design include: functions of casing, types of casing, casing inspection and handling, casing lowering, casing landing, and calculation of loads on casing including burst pressure, collapse pressure, and axial loading. Session includes example problems and solutions.

Day 5

Day 5 finishes the course with discussions of directional drilling and well drilling safety. Topics covered in directional drilling include: directional well applications, measuring and plotting hole trajectory, directional survey instruments, factors contributing to hole deviation, bottomhole assemblies affecting hole deviation, deflection tools affecting hole deviation, and challenges associated with directional drilling. Topics covered in rig safety include: personal safety practices, safety considerations for different rig components, hydrogen sulfide safety, fire prevention and extinguishing, and emergency first aid. Session includes example problems and solutions.
